Mode-locking in solid-state and semiconductor lasers
Abstract
Mode-locking in solid state lasers is discussed. Aspects of passive mode-locking are considered, including saturable absorbers, the lasing medium, computer simulation of ultrashort pulse generation process, statistics of the initial intensity profile, the probability of double-pulse generation, broadening and compression of pulses, and design criteria for passive mode-locking. Active mode-locking is then treated, including acousto-optic modulators, steady-state theory of mode-locking, transient analysis of the modulator process, design criteria for active mode-locking, and improved techniques for picosecond pulse generation. Mode-locking in semiconductor lasers, including diode lasers, is considered.
