Development of design for 'Venera' landers
Abstract
Stabilizing the Venera lander descent vehicle by means of a 'notched crown' or skirt is described. Helicopter drop and wind tunnel tests are reviewed. The aerodynamics of the landers, affected by soil sampling and other devices, are summarized. Descent, oscillation, and rotation parameters are reviewed in terms of strong wind and atmospheric turbulence.
