Bistatic radar reflectivities of Pruppacher-and-Pitter form raindrops at 14.3 and 5.33 GHz
Abstract
Bistatic reflectivities of raindrops with a nonspherical drop shape given by Pruppacher and Pitter are calculated at 14.3 and 5.33 GHz. Comparison is made between the bistatic reflectivities of Pruppacher-and-Pitter form raindrops and those of spherical raindrops. It is found that the differences between reflectivities of Pruppacher-and-Pitter form raindrops and those of spherical raindrops are small when the reflectivities are high. Possibility of observing the drop-size distribution aloft by the use of bistatic radar is also discussed on the basis of the results of calculations.
