Quantization of signals on a background of noise
Abstract
A probabilistic analysis of the analog-digital conversion of a determinate signal on a background of noise has made it possible to determine the instantaneous characteristics of a digital signal: the form of the distribution, the mean, the variance, and their integral values in the interval where the signal exists. Expressions are obtained which take into account the influence of input-noise characteristics, A-D converter parameters, and the limitation effect in the converter on the digital signal. The condition of quantization-noise noncorrelatedness is established, and the contribution of losses of amplitude quantization to the signal-noise ratio is determined. It is noted that the expressions obtained may be used to perform a rigorous analysis of linear digital systems.
