Physical phenomena in the field of a laser beam
Abstract
The physical principles underlying the interaction of intense laser radiation with gases, solids, and plasmas are reviewed. Particular attention is given to laser-induced phenomena in a high-temperature plasma (the resonant increase of electric-field amplitude, ponderomotive force, the mechanism of energy absorption, superthermal electrons, fast ions, and conversion to X-rays); the laser compression of matter; the generation of superstrong magnetic fields in a laser plasma; relativisitic effects in a laser plasma; and vacuum breakdown.
