Kinematics of gas clouds in Seyfert nuclei and quasars
Abstract
The distribution of Doppler emission-line widths among the spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars is investigated. Neither the model of disks randomly oriented in space nor the model of one-dimensional jets can adequately represent the observed frequency function of the velocities. The gas clouds responsible for the broad emission features in the spectra of active galaxy nuclei seem to have a more or less spherical geometry.
