HR 6434 and the factors limiting pulsational amplitudes of del SCT stars.
Abstract
The frequency structure of HR 6434 is examined and compared with the observed limiting magnitudes of other delta Scuti stars in order to discuss various hypotheses for the wide range of observed amplitudes. The light curves for HR 6434 are found to display two stable periods with a stable pulsation in two radial modes. One pulsation amplitude was limited to 0.02 arcmin, i.e., much smaller than other delta Scuti variables, and due to rotational velocity in the neighborhood of 164 km/sec. Slow rotation is concluded to be significant in large amplitude fluctuations. However, purely radial pulsators among the delta Scuti stars are noted to possess small amplitudes. Small amplitudes, combined with small rotational velocity, can also be attributable to gravitational helium settling.
