Interacting superposed electromagnetic shock plane waves in general relativity
Abstract
Unlike the waves of classical electromagnetic theory, gravitational waves do not generally obey the principle of superposition and therefore scatter each other. A solution is given of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations describing the collision of superposed electromagnetic shock plane waves. This work represents a generalization of the Bell-Szekeres (1974) and Griffith (1976) solutions, in which the number of incoming electromagnetic shock waves is increased.
