The occurrence of thermocapillary MHD convection in a cylindrical layer of liquid under conditions of weightlessness
Abstract
Antimirov and Liepinia (1978) have studied conditions regarding the occurrence of thermocapillary convection in a cylindrical layer of liquid under conditions of weightlessness. The present investigation represents an extension of these studies, taking into account the case in which a uniform external magnetic field is applied. The magnetic field vector points in the direction of the cylindrical axis. The flow on a solid cylindrical nonconducting surface is considered. It is assumed that the value of the surface tension is a linear function of the temperature. The dependence of the critical Marangoni number (B) on the Hartmann number (Ha) and the radius (R) is determined for conditions at which the Nusselt number (Bi) equals 1. The results are illustrated with the aid of a graph. It is found that the stability increases with increasing values of the Hartmann number.
