A high Reynolds number flow with closed streamlines
Abstract
Reference is made to an earlier paper (Lyne, 1971) concerned with flow in a pipe of circular cross-section, with the radius a, which is coiled in a circle of radius L (where L is much greater than a), with a pressure gradient along the pipe varying sinusoidally with the frequency and zero mean. In the present paper, the Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically for this configuration over a sequence of values of R up to 3000. The results obtained confirm the effectiveness of Lyne's approximation method, although there is no formal justification for the latter.
