Generation of High Magnetic Fields by Use of Filippov-Type Plasma Focus Device
Abstract
A method to generate a high magnetic field by compressing an initially applied magnetic flux in the Filippov-type plasma focus device is proposed. The MHD shock wave was generated ahead of the collapsing current sheet, and the flux was contained between the shock front and the current sheet in the experimental range. Just after the shock front collided with a sleeve, in which a single crystal of CdS as a Faraday probe and a magnetic probe were inserted, a rapid rise of the high magnetic field was observed by the probes. The flux of 2.7× 105 Mx was compressed into a radius of 0.7 cm and the maximum field of 140 kG was generated in the axial direction. The current and the radius of the sheet at the highest collapse were not affected by the sleeve. The probes for the field measurement survived even after more than ten discharges.
