Oblique ordinary mode propagation in the magnetospheric plasma
Abstract
An approximate formula is obtained for ordinary mode refractive index for the case of almost perpendicular propagation in a hot anisotropic plasma with a loss cone. It is pointed out that the influence of electron finite temperature on wave propagation is stronger when the wave frequency is close to the first two harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency. Ordinary mode energy focusing in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field can occur only in those regions of the magnetosphere, where the electron gyrofrequency is close to the electron plasma frequency. Ordinary mode waves are usually trapped in the vicinity of the magnetospheric equator and so their energy can be concentrated in this region.
