Design and fabrication of large- and small-bore railguns
Abstract
A program has been carried out to study the feasibility of railguns operating at megampere currents and to provide data to validate the modeling of railgun technology. The program has led to the selection of the magnetic flux compression generator design for a set of initial experiments, and the design of small-bore (12.7-mm square) and large-bore (50.0-mm square) railguns. The design criteria, materials, fabrication methods, and results of a series of tests are discussed.
