Heat or mass transfer from single spheres in a low Reynolds number flow
Abstract
The problem of heat or mass transfer from a sphere into a low Reynolds number flow is studied by analyzing the situation where the Peclet number P is less than one and the Reynolds number is small but non-zero. The Stokes stream function for a Newtonian fluid is deduced and the special cases of fluid drop, slip flow, and potential flow are applied to the Stokes resistance of the sphere. Expressions for the Nusselt number are derived in the cases of P going to zero and to infinity, and for various inertial effects.
