The structure of shock waves
Abstract
Shock-wave structure is studied on the basis of generalized kinetic theory, where the distribution function for the system as a whole is composed of functions referring to individual groups of molecules. The ratio of mean free path length to the thickness of the shock wave is determined as a function of Mach number (in argon). The theoretical results are found to agree with available experimental data for a wide range of Mach numbers.
