Satellite switching center for SS-TDMA communications
Abstract
An eight-by-eight satellite switching center (SSC) for satellite switched time-division multiple access operation is described which consists of a lightweight, broadband crossbar microwave switch matrix and a distribution control unit (DCU). Flexible interconnection possibilities that are nearly communications-transparent in the 3.5-6.5 GHz range are provided by wideband Wilkinson power dividers/combiners and resistively matched PIN diode switches. The DCU consists of a microprocessor-based design for the telemetry and command interface subsystem, and custom-designed LSI chips which control and drive the microwave switches. Broadband push-pull connectors simplify modular SSC assembly and disassembly. Each switching module is provided with a separate switch control electronics circuit and dual memory. SSC performance characteristics are assessed.
