The kinematics of the broad-line emission gas in quasars and Seyfert nuclei
Abstract
A kinematic model is proposed in which the broad-line emission clouds orbit the central continuum source in nearly parabolic orbits in order to produce a symmetric Lyman alpha profile in spite of the angular asymmetry in the Lyman alpha emission from an individual optically-thick cloud. Theoretical profiles are generated and compared with logarithmic line shapes, and the pros and cons of this model and others are discussed.
