Accretion in cataclysmic binaries. I - Modified alpha-disks with convection
Abstract
Models of the vertical structure of disks are constructed in which the viscosity is due to the turbulence generated by convection as it occurs in regions of high opacity and low adiabatic gradient as well as in the central layers. Outer convective layers are treated within the mixing-length theory formalism, while in the central convective zone a modified α-disk approach is followed. With α remaining a free parameter the vertical structure at a distance from the central mass depends only on the local accretion rate which determines the effective temperature Te. Resulting models are represented.
