Optical supernova remnants in external galaxies
Abstract
Optical emission observations of SNRs first identified on the basis of their X-ray properties by HEAO 2 have revealed several examples of unusual classes of objects which would have evaded identification by means of classical criteria. Results are given from an optical survey conducted at Mt. Stromlo, which has detected young remnants of Type II events, remnants of Type I events, and phenomena relevant to the evolution of old SNRs. Attention is given to abundance-sensitive line ratios in external galaxy SNRs, the galactic abundance gradient, and nonequilibrium conditions in SNRs.
