The effect of non-adiabatic layers on the vibrational behaviour of stars
Abstract
The two-time formalism for radial stellar pulsations is extended to include the treatment of the highly nonadiabatic outer layers, in order to overcome a major difficulty in the application of this method to realistic multizone stellar models, such as Cepheids. The linear vibrational stability coefficient is derived, and it is found that the nonadiabatic layers not only can influence this coefficient, but can in principle actually change its sign.
