SAR processor signature variations to point source inputs
Abstract
Overall SAR system performance is studied in a manner that allows instrument effects to be separated from processor effects. Images are analyzed to determine point target signatures and radiometric response characteristics. Processors and methods considered are: the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) optical, JPL digital. Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM) hybrid (i.e. optical with digital readout), ERIM optical, and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (MDA) digital. Significant variability is reported in the quality and nature of imaging output among the processors. Evidence of saturation is seen in all processor outputs, but the MDA digital is most linear.
