Spacelab Module - A candidate element of the future manned space systems
Abstract
The concepts of the Manned Space Platform and of the Space Operation Center have been proposed as potential realizations of an eventual permanently manned space system in low earth orbit. The present paper examines the possibility of using the present Spacelab manned Module in these, as well as other, future manned space stations. Based on considerations of the current Spacelab system and its possible evolution and of the configurations of possible future manned space systems including space construction bases, the Manned Space Platform and the Space Operation Center, it is shown that any of these configurations will have requirements for pressurized compartments for habitation, storage, laboratory, manufacturing and construction facilities that may be met by the Spacelab Module. The use of Spacelab Modules as the Logistics, Habitation and Experiment Modules of the Space Operation Center is then examined in detail.
