Sound broadcasting and newspaper page transmissions over satellite communication links
Abstract
Consideration is given to the use of satellite systems for newspaper facsimile transmission and sound broadcasting. Advantages of satellite transmission with respect to conventional terrestrial telephonic links for the transmission of centrally edited newspapers to decentralized printing houses are pointed out, and the systems established in the Soviet Union for newspaper transmission through satellite television systems along with television programs and digital sound broadcasting is indicated. The requirements of terrestrial and satellite links for sound program transmission are then compared and advantages of the satellite system with respect to the number of channels required, the possibility of decentralized control, and the independence of cost from distance are pointed out.
