Fundamental tests and measures of the structure of matter at short distances
Abstract
Recent progress in gauge field theories has led to a perspective on the structure of matter and basic interactions of short distances. It is clear that at very high energies quantum electrodynamics, together with the weak and strong interactions, are part of a unified theory with fundamental constants, symmetries, and conservation laws. A nontechnical introduction to these topics is given, with emphasis on fundamental tests and measurements.
