Lasers: Theory and applications
Abstract
The basics of lasers and their applications are presented. The theoretical aspects of lasers are delineated, and preliminary principles are introduced, including quantum mechanics, the Einstein A and B coefficients, the rate equation approach to studying laser action, the semiclassical theory of Lamb, and the phase coherent nature of the stimulated emission process. Various applications of lasers are discussed, such as spatial frequency filtering, holography, laser-induced fusion, and light wave communications. The historical development of the laser and its applications in holography are discussed in papers by Nobel laureates.
