High packing density modulation techniques for satellite links
Abstract
A comparison is presented of the performance of extant 4-bit/sec/Hz high packing density modulation schemes for satellite links, with attention to bit error rate, filtering, and channel impairment, in light of a simplified satellite channel model which consists of a modulator, a transmitter filter, a receiver filter, and a demodulator. It is found that 32- and 64-PSK schemes are more sensitive to channel impairment than such techniques as Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, and that none of the modulation schemes studied proves superior to all others in every category.
