GPS control segment capabilities
Abstract
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a major new navigation system which is currently under development. GPS will provide a highly accurate, real time, three dimensional, common grid positioning and navigation system. It will provide 16 meter accuracy to authorized users, anywhere in the world, at any time, in any weather. The present investigation is concerned with the capabilities and design of the operational version of the Control Segment of GPS. GPS is being developed in three major segments, including the User Segment, Space Segment, and Control Segment. The Control Segment is developing the systems that control the GPS satellite constellation, and upload navigation information to the satellites which in turn broadcast the navigation information to the users. The Control Segment is developing three systems, which include the Phase I Control System, the Initial Control System, and the Operational Control System (OCS). A description of the detailed design of the OCS is presented.
