An analysis of full-duplex data links in SNA networks
Abstract
An analytic model is presented of a full-duplex Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) data link. Asynchronous Balanced Mode (ABM) is the mode of operation considered. The model can be applied to data links in general (e.g., satellite, terrestrial, etc.) and is useful in determining such statistics as link efficiency, message response time, and message throughput rates. Thus, both batch (large message sizes) and shorter interactive (inquiry-reply or data entry) messages can be analyzed. Batch transactions are usually analyzed via throughput while response time measurements are the means of analyzing interactive transactions. A description of the IBM SDLC protocol is presented as well as an analysis of various network configurations.
