Error rates for narrowband Manchester coded digital FM
Abstract
Because of disagreements that have arisen, it is considered worthwhile to reconsider the problem of calculating error rates for Manchester-coded frequency-shift-keyed MCFSK transmission. A system model is presented, and the method of demodulation is defined. Distortion and noise analyses are carried out, together with error rate calculations for MCFSK transmission. The best combination of system parameters (frequency deviation ratios, receiver filter bandwidth) is sought for the case of non-return-to-zero signal. It is shown that a minimum BER is obtained for a peak-to-peak frequency deviation of about 1.35 times the bit rate and a receiver bandwidth of about 1.8 times the bit rate. It is also shown that the results in the literature tend to be optimistic.
