Wide-band digital communication for the 80's
Abstract
Communication needs have increased tremendously in connection with the decentralization of American businesses and other developments. As the U.S. telecommunications voice network was not designed to carry vast amounts of digital information, new approaches were being considered for handling huge amounts of information. An overview is provided of the telecommunications network proposed, in this connection, by a U.S. company. The network is to be based on the use of the 10 GHz microwave radio band as an electronic message system. Basically the new concept involves the establishment of a nationwide high speed digital communications network accommodating data communications, document distribution, and teleconferencing transmissions. The network would use a combination of satellite transmission facilities or terrestrial facilities and microwave radio for local distribution.
