Technical assistance telemetry channel coding investigation
Abstract
The feasibility of an outer coding scheme for spacecraft to ground telemetry channels was investigated. A theoretical study and tradeoff of outer coding schemes, taking into account achievable performance, encoder/decoder complexity and compatibility with ESA operational requirements, were performed. The recommended scheme is a systematic (256, 224) Reed-Solomon code over GF (257). The hardware implementation concept of the Reed-Solomon encoder is outlined and algorithms to be used in the Reed-Solomon decoder are given. The Fermat number transform for computing the syndrome values and error locations is elaborated. An algorithm that solves the equation which determines error locator and error evaluator polynomial is described.
