Engineering development of Navstar GPS user equipment
Abstract
The development of operationally effective GPS user equipment will make possible the wide-scale military use of GPS in conjunction with the operational deployment of satellite and control segments. By 1983, over 50 sets will be qualified to military specifications for size, weight, cost, and performance under tactical nuclear battlefield conditions. Each set consists of a receiver/processor unit, a control/display, a flexible modular interface, and an antenna/preamplifier. This paper presents a hardware design overview and gives special attention to the antenna/preamps, the receiver/processors, the control/indicators, the flexible modular interfaces, the packaging, and the navigation.
