Improvement of stability of axial vortex amplifers
Abstract
Two approaches to improve the stability of vortex amplifiers are described. Firstly, modifications to existing amplifiers are proposed which improve mixing between supply and control flows. Modifying the centerbody was found to change the shape of the characteristic considerably; careful choice of centerbody geometry can also reduce the severity of oscillations. Secondly, the supply inlet configuration was found to have a significant effect on stability of the vortex amplifier. Several combinations were found to give a very low noise characteristic. Tests also suggest that a properly oriented single elongated supply port may give stable operation.
