The design of a 30/20 GHz regenerative payload for satellite applications
Abstract
The high-capacity point-to-point communication satellite system operating at 20/30 GHz being considered for domestic telephone connections between the larger cities of Italy is discussed. To overcome the rain-induced attenuation expected at these frequencies, a multibeam high-gain antenna system for the spacecraft is being considered. In addition, high-speed digital transmission at 360 Mb/s is envisaged for each transponder with on-board baseband regeneration and routing. The payload design for such a system is discussed, along with the main design choices in the antenna and repeater area. A preliminary transmission analysis is given.
