Implementation imperfections of a 40-DCPSK on-board demodulator Performance degradations and measurement techniques
Abstract
The uplink of a digital satellite communications system, with 40-PSK modulation and on-board differential demodulation is analysed, in order to assess the performance degradations of the channel vs. the implementation imperfections of the demodulator assembly. Phase errors, delay errors, selective characteristics of the delay line, voltage offset of the phase comparators, signal couplings inside the demodulator assembly are considered. The impact of the inclusion of a limiter ahead of the demodulator is discussed. Suitable measurement methods are proposed for testing the overall demodulator performance and assessing the implementation imperfections.
