Backscattering of laser mirrors
Abstract
A measuring device is described which allows the determination of mirror backscattering responsible for the lock-in effect in laser gyros. Results of backscatter measurements as a function of the angle of incidence, of the local positions on the mirror surface, and of the polarization states of the light beam are presented and discussed. Measurements show that silver mirrors with supplementary dielectric layers of sufficient reflectivity have the least backscattering of all mirrors studied.
