Notes on coordinate generation: Fundamental ideas
Abstract
Optimal coordinates, undoubtedly of great use in analytical and numerical studies of boundary layers, are the coordinates in which the boundarylayer solution contains the proper behavior far from the body to produce the proper inviscid outer flow. How these coordinates can be calculated with the firstorder boundary layer equations to produce, not only the proper firstorder inviscid flow, but also the secondorder outer flow resulting due to displacement thickness effects is reviewed and the ideas are extended to higher order.
