Techniques for probing cloud microstructure
Abstract
The rapid expansion of cloud physics instrumentation during the past decade is reviewed. The primary proliferation in microphysical measurement techniques is discussed in detail. The performance of specific instruments using optical scattering to size cloud droplets, optical imaging to provide size and structural information on precipitation elements, and polarization to differentiate liquid from ice is analyzed. Techniques for liquid water content measurements are also compared.
