Conceptual design of a bitter-magnet toroidal-field system for the ZEPHYR ignition test reactor
Abstract
The following problems are described and discussed: (1) the interdependence of throat stresses, plasma parameters (margins of ignition) and stored energy; (2) magnet configuration - the shape of the plates including standard turns, turns located at beam ports, diagnostic and closure flanges; (3) ripple computation and (4) the effect of magnetic field diffusion on heating and neutron heating; (5) the two and three dimensional finite element codes and the results; (6) the calculation of critical stresses due to toroidal and overturning forces and the method of constraint of these forces; and (7) the manufacture of the constituent parts of the Bitter plates, and method of assembly and remote maintenance.
