Strain-gage techniques for studies of projectile behavior during penetration
Abstract
The behavior of long steel rods during the penetration of steel armor is being examined by strain measurements performed with foil resistance gages. Experiments in this investigation have employed both forward-ballistic and reverse-ballistic techniques. These techniques are described, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Test data have been examined by a simple-wave analysis, and analytical results are discussed within the context of experimental problems. Preliminary efforts to assess the validity of measurements and analysis are described.
