The MX-1307 mass spectrometer in the identification and examination of positive ions in flames
Abstract
The sample-input system, the ion-optical system, and the recording unit of a mass spectrometer are modified to make the identification of the positive ions and the examination of the relative concentration profiles in flames possible. It is noted that the ion composition varies with the kind of fuel used and with the excess oxygen coefficient. The modifications and the apparatus are described, and include: a probe; a conical electrode; a diaphragm; focusing, correcting, and accelerating electrodes; and a receiving slit. Charged particle distributions in flames are studied to determine the importance of the electron-ion phenomena in combustion and to develop means of monitoring and controlling combustion by means of electric and magnetic fields
