Integrated inspection of workpieces from the large forge
Abstract
The feasibility of inspecting workpieces during fabrication while the part remains on a machine and simultaneous with machining operations was investigated. Techniques are outlined and studies are summarized. These include ultrasonic inspection of a turbine shaft, automated inspection integration, and an investigation on the integrated inspection of forged parts. Results indicate that wide variety in manufacturing criteria as well as great diversity in workpiece geometry render a universal solution extremely difficult to realize.
