Modeling noise and the modulation transfer functions in the Fairchild CCD 133/143
Abstract
The difference between surface channel and buried or bulk channel charge coupled devices is explained. For the physical study of the bulk 133/143, CCD both temporal noise which corresponds to fluctuations of a detector element in function of time for an invariable input; and spatial fluctuations which follow the curve of mean temporal fluctuations for each photoelement were distinguished. Noise models are presented for shot noise, dark signal noise, and noise sources in the registers, i.e. bulk trapping noise and output stage noise. The modulation transfer function (MTF) measures the response of a point on the CCD array to a spatially modulated luminous input. The geometric MTF, the transfer MTF, and the diffusion MTF are considered and modeled.
