Direct broadcast satellites: Policies, prospects, and potential competition
Abstract
Potential service options and concentration for a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) television service are examined relative to regulatory issues. The conclusion is drawn that pay television is the most likely service, absent regulation, to be provided due to the large potential cashflow that offsets the high risk of the enterprise. The extent of competition with terrestrial distribution modes is examined with respect to substitutability and geography. Technical, cost, and demand characteristics are discussed in order to evaluate the potential for competing DBS systems.
