The EXOSAT Mission
Abstract
The Exosat (European X-ray Observatory Satellite) mission is discussed with reference to its objectives, satellite characteristics and operational modes, satellite instrumentation, and observatory capability, operations, and planning. The following mission objectives are mentioned: the precise location of sources; the mapping of diffuse, extended sources; the broad-band spectroscopy of sources; the dispersive spectroscopy of pointlike sources; the study of the time variability of sources; and the detection of new sources in medium or deep surveys or in error-box searches.
