Polarimetric observations of southern binary systems.
Abstract
Polarimetric results are presented for 23 southern hemisphere binary systems, indicating that 15 of these stars show polarimetric variations. The Brown et al. (1978) model is shown to permit the computation of the orbital plane, and it is concluded that the probability of detecting circumstellar material in close binary systems is high. Three systems with Am components, and one with an Ap component, are found to be variables or possible variables. It is suggested that mechanisms other than Thompson scattering have been responsible for their polarization.
