a Theoretical Study of Plasmaspheric HISS.
Abstract
The generation of plasmaspheric hiss via the whistler -mode instability is considered. Combined ray-tracing and growth-rate calculations are performed to find the path -integrated growth rates of a large number of waves. Contrary to the theory, no reflecting waves are found. The waves are all damped by Landau resonance at high latitudes before reflection can take place. The power spectrum is calculated using the growth rates found, at two points in the plasmasphere. This is compared with the observations. There are some qualitative points of agreement between the theoretical and observed spectra, but the calculated intensities are several orders of magnitude too low. Finally, some possible variations in the theoretical approach are mentioned.
