The Charge Symmetric Reactions Trilon (polarized Deuteron, NEUTRON)HELIUM-4 and HELIUM-3(POLARIZED Deuteron, PROTON)HELIUM-4 Compared Through Analyzing Powers Below 6 Mev.
Abstract
Angular distributions of the vector and tensor analyzing powers of(, ). the charge symmetric ('3)H(d,n)('4)He and ('3)He(d,p)('4)He reactions have been. measured from 3 to 6 MeV. The present data provide information. relevant to the structure of the ('5)He and ('5)Li nuclei, whose structure has. not yet been well established. This is particularly true for ('5)He in which. the ('3)H(d,n)('4)He channel has only been sparsely examined. The present(' ). data also explore further the extent of differences observed between the. two reactions in a previous A(,zz)(0(DEGREES)) tensor analyzing power study. The analyzing powers were measured using the Ohio State University polarized ion source which provided a vector (p(,z) = 0.52) or tensor (p(,zz). = 0.78) polarized deuteron beam. Complete angular distributions of. A(,y), A(,zz), A(,xz) and A(,xx) have been measured in addition to a small sample. of A(,yy). For the (d,p) measurements, ('3)He was contained at 2 atm. in a(' ). small diameter gas cell. Reaction protons were detected by four pairs of surface barrier detectors located symmetrically about the beam axis. The data are generally in good agreement with those of Gruebler et al. In a comparison of the experimental data for the two reactions. differences are observed to exist at most energies for most analyzing. powers but they are less than what might be anticipated from the. striking differences in the A(,zz)(0(DEGREES)) measurements. These differences are. also smaller than observed earlier in a similar comparison of analyzing. power for the charge symmetric ('2)H(d,n)('3)He and ('2)H(d,n)('3)H performed(' ). by Dries et al. at this laboratory. The present data have been added to the data base for the global R -matrix search on the mass five system at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. These calculations are expected to illuminate the origin of the observed differences and to better define the structures of the ('5)He and ('5)Li nuclei. (').
