Measurements of lidar backscattering from clouds
Abstract
The operating principles, main elements (laser and detectors) and theoretical characteristics of the system are described. On-line data acquisition facilities are discussed. Two telescopes are used simultaneously to receive the parallel and perpendicular components of the polarized cloud backscatter signatures. Details are given on calibrating the system and on how to distinguish between ice and water clouds from polarization measurements. Polarization and multiple scattering effects are discussed.
