Methods for determining spacecraft orbits
Abstract
Methods and algorithms for determining approximate (preliminary) spacecraft orbits are described. The properties of the ballistic motion of spacecraft in various coordinate systems are discussed, and the problem of processing observations for the determination of preliminary orbits is described. Recursive statistical methods for processing redundant measurements are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on a unified approach to the determination of spacecraft orbits on the basis of the minimum necessary quantity of initial data. This approach is based on a twopoint problem, whose solution is reduced to the solution of a system of transcendental equations, which makes it possible to determine the orbit with sufficient accuracy from the processing of large measurement intervals. The mathematical basis of the measurements is presented, as are computational algorithms, characteristics of estimation accuracy, and highspeed programs used to execute these algorithms.
